Thom McMullen, ASLA
Gardening, design and a love of the outdoors have been a part of Thom’s life from a very early age. He spent summer days working with his father planting perennials and annuals, pruning roses and fruit trees and tending to the family vegetable garden. He began early on experimenting with different color combinations in flower color and foliage, structure and contrast in the garden.
His great interest in fine arts was fueled as a private student of a renowned New York artist. This study further developed his understanding of color, structure and balance. He had is first showing, and sold his first pieces at the age of 13.
Inspiration
Thom’s extensive global travel has provided access to many garden styles. He’s enjoyed the gardens of Bali, Thailand and Malaysia. Some of his favorite European gardens are the formal ones found in France, on expansive country estates in England and Ireland and the Mediterranean gardens in Greece, Malta, Spain, Italy and Portugal. These gardens and those in North America, South Africa, South and Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean have contributed to his design aesthetic.
Experience
Thom holds a Bachelor’s in Landscape Architecture (BLA) from Iowa State University; is a member of the Boston Chapter of Landscape Architects and The American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA). Upon graduation from Iowa State University in 1983, He strengthened his knowledge in plant fundamentals, construction and design while working with a major design/build firm located on the North Shore of Boston. This 8 year collaboration strengthened his knowledge of design, construction and plant properties before establishing his own firm, THOM McMULLEN – LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT in 1991. Thom’s dedication to his art and clients, and enthusiasm for excellence has elevated Thom as a premiere Landscape Architect in the Northeast.
